Autumn Gardening Jobs

Posted By Info Conclean

Autumn is one of the busiest times in the garden. The days are cooler but the soil is still warm, making it an ideal time to plant or move plants, or create that great new veggie garden before winter sets in. Here's a list of things to do if you're in Victoria.

  1. If your garden beds have become dried out over summer, give the beds a good water and then apply a wetting agent to improve water and nutrient penetration.
  2. Now is the time to establish new garden beds or a new veggie garden. Remove grass and weeds from the area. If the soil is heavy clay add gypsum at a rate of 3 cups per m2 and compost or cow manure. Mulch with a layer of Sugar Cane or Pea Straw and let the area rest for a few weeks before planting perennials, annuals or veggies.
  3. In established gardens cut down herbaceous perennials as they finish. Choose a cool day and divide if necessary to rejuvenate the clumps.
  4. Deadhead roses for a final flush of flowers. If you intend to plant root stock in winter, look around now while they're still in flower before making your final choice.
  5. Trim pelargoniums and geraniums.
  6. Repot plants that have outgrown their pots. Choose a good potting mix and water with a seaweed solution to settle them in. If you don’t want to move to a larger container, replace some of the soil around the root ball with new mix.
  7. Collect fallen leaves and add them to the compost bin.
  8. Trim the old flowers from bottlebrushes as they finish their autumn colour.
  9. Lift and divide lilium bulbs if crowded and replant the firm well-developed bulbs as soon as possible.
  10. As the weather cools cut back raspberry canes.
  11. Clean up strawberry plants, removing dead leaves and runners, rejuvenate the bed with new plants if necessary.
  12. Take hardwood cuttings from deciduous trees and shrubs. Strike them directly into the ground, where they can stay for the following seasons before moving them to be planted out.
  13. Reduce the water for indoor plants and try to keep them away from fires and heaters.
  14. Plant spring flowering bulbs; daffodils, jonquils, snow drops, freesias, ranunculas, etc.
  15. Plant spring annuals now; sweet peas, forget me knots, cineraria, lupins, alyssum, poppies, pansies, polyanthus, viola, snapdragons and primula.
  16. Winter veggies to plant now; broad beans, broccoli, cabbage, silver beet, spinach, onions and leeks.
  17. Mulch the veggie garden with a fresh layer of Sugar Cane mulch. I find it sweetens the soil and attracts worms!

Have fun maintaining your garden this autumn & you'll enjoy the rewards in spring! Contact us if you're unsure or too busy and would prefer us to do it for you.

Our Tips for a Top Garden

Posted By Info Conclean

Does it seem like your garden is the worst in the street with lawn and weeds taking over? And no matter how much time you devote to it nothing seems to thrive? If your garden is in need of a spruce up heading into the Christmas entertainment season, Conclean can help.

5 top tips to give your garden a boost

  1. Get the weeds out - A constant problem during the growing season, weeds should be dealt with promptly by pulling them out. Or, if necessary, spray thoroughly with a specialised weed killer as soon as they appear and before they set seed. Ground covers can help keep the weeds down, as there are no bare patches of soil for them to grow.
  2. Give shrubs a trim and get rid of any that have seen better days - Pruning your plants regularly will prevent them from growing out of control and save you having an annual battle. Trimming often means you only have to nip off the tips of new growth to encourage bushier growth.
  3. Maintain your sprinkler system - Cleaning your irrigation system at least twice a year will ensure your plants get the best quantity of water. It removes material that has made it past the filter and settled in the lines. Simply unscrew the drip or spray outlets, flush the line, then clean the filter.
  4. Wetta Soil & Mulch - Mulch is the low-maintenance landscaping hero. First, hose on Wetta Soil to treat water repellent soil and to conserve water in your pots, gardens and lawns. Then spread mulch over the soil, which hinders weed growth and prevents the soil from drying out too quickly. It also helps keep the soil cool in summer and insulates the ground in winter – the plants will love you for it! Use organic mulch such as lucerne or sugarcane to encourage worms. As it breaks down, the mulch and worms will add nutrients to the soil.
  5. Don't mow too low - The best thing you can do for your lawn is to mow high and often. Taking off only the blade tips makes the grass much healthier and denser. Plus, you won’t need to use a catcher – just let the cuttings add organic matter to your lawn.

The team at Conclean can assist by completing one or all of these garden maintenance tips for you if you're too busy with Christmas preparations to spend in the garden. Contact us and one of the team will be in touch to discuss your needs.
